Après désignation d'un lectotype. KlMMINS ( 1960) a mis en synonymie Baetis gemellus Eaton. l 885 (Terra typica : les Alpes, en Suisse et en France, et les Apennins) avec B. rhodani (Pictet. 1845). MÜLLER LIEBENAU ( 1969) a rétabli la validité de B. gemellus. essentiellement sur la base de matériel, principalement larvaire. provenant des Pyrénées et de Roumanie. La prospection intensive de la principale localité type française de B. gemellus. à la période de vol indiquée par Eaton. n'a pas permis de retrouver B. gemellus sensu Müller Liebenau, jamais identifié non plus ni en Suisse ni en Italie. Il apparaît que les bonnes description et diagnose de B."gemellus" par Müller Liebenau correspondent à une autre espèce que celle érigée par Eaton, et qui est nouvelle : B. gadeai n. sp.. endémique probable aux Pyrénées.
Toutefois. le problème de la validité de B. gemellus Eaton par rapport à B. rhodani demeure et devra être résolu à l'avenir sur du matériel alpin. En accord avec ENGBLÖM ( 1996), on peut estimer que le nom de rhodani a en effet été très probablement appliqué dans le temps à un complexe d'espèces euroméditerranéennes jumelles.

Designating a lectotype. KIMMINS ( 1960) synonymized Baetis gemellus Eaton. 1885 (Terra typica : the Alps in Switzerland and in France. and the Apennines) with B. rhodani (Pictet. 1845). MÜLLER- LIEBENAU ( 1969) reinstated the validity of B. gemellus on the basis of material from the Pvrenees (adults and larvae) and Roumania (larvae only). e.g. two territories 2000 km apart. Intensive prospecting of the main French type-locality of B. gemellus within the flight period indicated by Eaton, did not allow to find again B. gemellus sensu Müller-Liebenau. never identitied in Switzerland and in Italy either.
It appears that the good description and diagnosis of B. "gemellus" by Müller-Liebenau correspond to an other species than that erected by Eaton. and which is new : B. gadeai n. sp.. possible endemic from the Pyrenean mountains, Holotype and paratypes from the Ossau Valley (French Pyrénées-Atlantiques) are designated, However. the problem of the validitv of B. gemellus sensu Eaton remains, and will have to be solved in the future on alpine material: in accordance with ENGBLÖM ( 1996). it can be assumed that the name rhodani was quite probably attributed to a complex of euromediterranean species. over a wide range of latitudes (3.500 4.000 km). for a century and half. That being said, B. gemellus, and B. rhodani sensu stricto -both living in western alpine streams. with low conductivity- are probably
synonymous.
